Det står ein strid mellom kampglade riddarar under Hallings øy. Stridseplet er stolt
Margjit. Herre-Per forsvarer henne lenge, men tilslutt orkar han ikkje meir og kastar
sverdet: nå må du Margjit, verje deg sjølv! Det gjer Margjit. Ho kler seg i rustning og
med sverdet høgg ho ned den fremste motstandaren, Iven Erningsson, så kroppen hans
fell i to stykke. Kongen sender bod på henne og ber henne velje om ho vil bli frilla hans
eller lide ein brå død. Da trugar Margjit han med sverdet, og kongen fell til fote og tar
henne til dronning.

Landstad tenkte seg at vi i denne balladen hadde «en Romance» om stormannen Alv
Erlingsson, som vart fengsla og avretta i Helsingborg (1290). Men det stemmer ikkje.
Derimot har vi gjennom namnet «Iven Erningsson» ei minning om hovudpersonen i
Ívens saga: Iven, son til Urian/Yrian. Ívens saga byggjer på Chrétien de Troyes' Yvain
ou le Chevalier au Lion og vart omsett frå fransk til norrønt på 1200-talet under Håkon
Håkonsson. Sagaen gav opphav både til ballade- og eventyrdikting, særleg ved at
namneformer og småmotiv vart lånt inn i den munnlege tradisjonen.
Balladen finst også på dansk og svensk, men med noko varierande handling.
